Sea Holiday Midge 1992

While I’d been waiting for my temporary glass cabinet that I showed you in my previous entry, I’d made a review of my stock of doll stands to check how many I’d been missing. I picked up my Jewel Hair Mermaid Midge that I like so much and decided it was high time for another Diva. There were two potential candidates – Wedding Day and Sea Holiday. They’re so different and yet there are some similarities, both are very pretty, both have no bangs and are elaborately dressed. This time I chose Sea Holiday but only for the geographical proximity, I simply didn’t want to wait for her too long. Sea Holiday Midge arrived within a week and was NRFB which is a rare event for my collection, because although my dolls sometimes come with their boxes they are usually unboxed by their previous owners.

The box is a little beaten but still in a good shape. It’s actually quite large for an ordinary playline but that was the time when kanekalon hair started growing rapidly and the boxes needed to be sizable enough to hold it. The front window has some writhing in English, French and German and in gold to emphasize the fact that Barbie is going on a luxurious holiday. The back of the box shows the entire line- Barbie, Ken and Midge and they’re all dressed in 2 in 1 outfits but as they are going on a yacht trip, Mattel also released several sea holiday themed fashion packs for the dolls to change 5 times a day and Ken was not neglected this time, he got a fashion pack as well as the girls.

Of course there’s a yacht too which was called Barbie Sea Holiday Yacht Cruise Ship. I like it very much and I can even forgive the designers team for providing it with a real working blender and two cups – they must have been drunk at work to have come up with such a ridiculous concept but anyway, the yacht is huge (approx. 90 cm) and very luxurious. There’s a deck pool, a kitchenette, some lounge chairs and tables and golden china and a champagne ice bucket, but no steering wheel, oh well, that must have been redundant. Two years later Mattel released an identical playset and they called it Barbie Dream Boat - the Ultimate Seaside Adventure. The two sets differed only in terms of the box graphics and production countries, I guess. Although I collect only dolls and no playsets, I’d sure like to own the yacht, but it’s unobtainable, It’s ridiculously expensive and if it’s not, then it’s missing most of its pieces.

When I unboxed the doll, her kanekalon hair just exploded right in my face. The hair is so voluminous and so soft that although I prefer saran to kanekalon, I like Midge’s hair a lot. The curls are beautifully preserved and the color is quite unique too. When I think of Midge, I see a readhed, but her hair is this soft chocolate shade that I love. She’s got no bangs and her hair is pulled back which is good because nothing obscures the pretty sculpt. The facepaint is amazing. Midge’s eyes are two toned – green and blue and her green eyeshadow makes the colors really pop. Above the thin green line, there’s another layer of eyeshadow, green- white that reaches her brows and it’s barely noticeable, it’s actually visible only when sun light touches it. Her lips are candy pink, there’s no blush on her cheeks. I really like this simple facepaint and I think it goes best with the Diva mold.

The doll is beautiful, but I like her stock outfit just as much. Midge is wearing a yellow, ankle-long skirt with a pink belt that’s actually a separate piece. There’s a large scarf tied around her waist and a yellow top that shows her belly. The top has a dual function, it’s a part of her bikini, because underneath the skirt there’s its bottom part. Interestingly enough the bikini top is yellow, but the bottom is pink, the girl sure wasn’t afraid of mixing colors. If she happens to be cold during a storm, she’s got a jacket that’s the same pattern as her scarves. I’m not sure if I like her hat or not. It sure is pretty and tied with a scarf in a very elegant manner, and the idea of a large brimmed hat goes well with the entire luxurious feel of the series, but the material that it’s made of isn’t the best and there’s a hole in the middle of the hat that’s weird enough and will give her sunstroke as hell. The hat looks a bit awkward from the side. But I’ve kept the hat as it is because it secures her hair so it doesn’t go flying around. Her shoes are of course the classic Minnie Mouse pumps, this time they’re yellow to match the outfit.

Midge likes accessorizing, she’s wearing golden earrings and a matching ring that look rather modest and certainly not luxurious enough so she paired them with an intricate necklace. At first, judging by the photos, I was sure she had binoculars to observe dolphins, sharks or Barbie Mermaids, but the binoculars turned out to be a necklace, golden of course and if that’s not enough gold, there’s more. Midge is wearing a pink belt with a huge golden star that a Bronx rapper would be delighted with. She’s only missing a 24-carat lifebuoy that would match the rest, though it would be hardly practical.

Midge’s outfit and jewelry are so elaborate that she hardly needs anything else, so the only accessories that are included in the package are her brush- pink this time and a tourist folder that shows some of the picturesque places she can go to and the luxuriant greenery she can admire. I’m sure she should be comfortable sunbathing on Tahiti but she’ll certainly be cold on the North Pole.

Out of the entire Sea Holiday cast I like Midge the best. This time Barbie’s bestie decided to outshine the leading lady, Midge is spectacular. I can never resist the temptation of taking a group picture, but my little group consists of only two Diva dolls and there’s my beloved Jewel Hair Mermaid Midge next to my Sea Holiday. Sounds they’ve been designed to stand together in my cabinet.

Fashion Avenue 1997 #18131, #18107 and 2001 #56111

I love Barbie fashion nearly as much as the doll herself, so today’s entry is all about clothes. I’ve already mentioned the Fashion Avenue series when I described a new dress for my poor Jewel Hair Mermaid Midge, so today’s just a quick reminder – Fashion Avenue was launched in 1995 and continued for several years until it evolved into Fashion Fever, but for me, some of the early releases have something very much 80s about them and although I don’t love all the fashion packs indiscriminately, I cannot but appreciate the time and effort put into their design and the quality of its execution. And I don’t think I’m isolated in that since the series remains very popular amongst collectors worldwide which is evident by the price they command. I own 4 complete sets in total and each was acquired with a bit of luck. There are three beauties with me today modelling – Pet Doctor Barbie 1996, Jewel Hair Mermaid Midge 1995 and Standard European / Canadian Barbie 1976.

Pet Doctor Barbie is wearing a lovely ensamble number #18131 Boutique 1997 that comes with a baby pink half turtleneck sweater. The sweater is paired with a plaid pink and blue miniskirt with an opalescent belt and a pearl heart-shaped buckle. The belt isn’t very durable and needs to be handled with care. It’s also an integral part of the skirt. The set includes a number of accessories, one of them being a cute hat with a pompon that’s the same pattern as the skirt. It stays on Barbie’s head surprisingly well. The pack also comes with a pair of shoes – pearly pink flats. These unfortunately don’t fit Barbie very well, they wouldn’t go all the way. But my favorite part of the entire set are the … pantyhose! Who would have thought of such a thing nowadays, but back then Mattel sure did. These are genuine Barbie size pantyhose with a rubber band and a stitch in the back! Of course they’re not made to survive long in the hands of a child, who by the way would need a mommy’s help to put them on, but this little piece of clothing is a proof that in the 90s Mattel would still make an effort.

Mermaid Midge is presenting #18107 International Italy 1997, and to say the outfit is colorful is an understatement! It is fiercely pink with a bit of yellow, orange and purple. Only Barbie can wear it and look fabulous but that’s her magic. The most prominent part of the set is the striped blouse with a collar and large cuffs. The blouse closes with plastic snaps and I love the tiny gold beads that imitate buttons. The blouse is very extravagant so it’s been put together with a simple and very short skirt. Both articles are made of polyester that imitates satin very nicely. There’s also a purse that really opens and you could put something tiny inside. There’s a pair of my favorite pantyhose too and the heels are much daintier than the standard Barbie pumps but they refuse to cooperate with the pantyhose. If this was not enough, there’s also a scarf for Barbie that’s made of the same fabric as the pantyhose, and that piece is unique. A scarf for Barbie? I’d never seen anything quite like it before, but I love the sight!

Standard E/C is wearing a set number #56111 Charm It’s my party 2001. Although it was released much later than the previous ones it has this very much 70s vibe and it brings Scooby Doo to my mind. The set comes with a yellow blouse that closes with a single snap and it’s tied with a ribbon. 2000 something was the time when bell bottom pants were revived so Barbie needed those as well as she always follows whatever a given season brings – good or bad. These pants are just crazy! The design is interesting to say the least – the weird blotchy pink flowers and yellow and orange circles give you the impression of 3D and will sure give you a headache if you stare at them too long. Whatever Barbie wears must always be coordinated so the pants come with a matching purse and it’s functional too. The set also comes with platform shoes with ankle straps. The straps really work, unlike the contemporary Barbie shoes, they don’t have a slit in the back, but a tiny little peg and a hole and stay on Barbie’s feet really well. Although this is my least favorite set of the three, I appreciate the quality fabrics, the shoes and the purse that really works. Standard E/C really looks like she’s turned back the time, went shopping in the 70s and came back again!

I purchased the three sets NRFB but I unboxed them before I took any pictures. The first two sets had the very nice and sizable pink boxes that looked like shopping windows of the Fashion Avenue Boutiques, the third one had a simpler design and unlike the other ones, didn’t come with a catalogue tempting you to buy other sets. There were pictures of good 12 fashion packs at the back of the box though. So here’s the pictures of the catalogue closing today’s entry. Enjoy!

Jewel Hair Mermaid Midge 1995

In general, I don’t like any sort of crafting as it’s time-consuming and the results never meet my expectations since I’m so horrible at it. What could ever induce me to spending several of my evenings with a needle in my hand doing exactly what I dislike so much? A very sad accident that my beautiful Royal Romance Barbie suffered. When I purchased Royal, she was perfect and immediately inspired me to photograph every detail of her beauty and describe her in my blog entry although I was on vacation at that time. Unfortunately, she was damaged on her way home and to my shock, when I unpacked the doll, nine of her fingers were broken! My immediate rescue resources were limited to a superglue which wouldn’t initially hold. When it finally did, a body donor was on her way.

Never before had I held a doll in such a pitiable state! The unidentified Midge was filthy and smelt like stale tobacco. One of her previous owner evidently loved her so much she, or he could actually eat her, or at least, evidently tried – the doll bore some chewing marks on her feet, She suffered some arm damage with the use of an unknown instrument. Her right arm doesn’t hold position and falls on its own accord. But her hair!!!!!!! It was butchered, brushed out, matted, felt like cotton and smelt disgusting! When I identified her I couldn’t believe that this rag was once gorgeous, silky and shiny mane of Jewel Hair Mermaid Midge 1995 so long you could actually wrap it round her ankles, or rather round her mermaid fins. The doll looked worse than it could be judged by the photos and didn’t even qualify to be a body donor… I felt sorry for her, got her some hair and decided to resuscitate her.

I literally scrubbed poor Midge, cut her hair near her scalp (scary), decapitated her (dreadful) and removed the remnants of her once magnificent hair. I used the non-glue method, because I’m so unbelievably clumsy I would certainly smudge the glue all over her face and end her agony she incurred from the hands of her previous owner. So no glue whatsoever. I watched some hair reroot tutorials and just let it happen. The reroot method is very simple, you just tie a knot in the middle of a hair strand and thread both ends through two neighboring holes. You just go hole by hole, row by row … for hours. The process takes time, but it’s actually quite relaxing. Then you boil wash the hair and you’re done.

I usually try to style my rescued doll’s hair to resemble the factory hairdo as much as possible (“try” being the keyword) but I don’t like mermaids or disproportionally long hair (yeah, I’m actually not so crazy about Totally Hair Barbie). So I just trimmed it a bit, took some front rows of her hair and tied it with a rubber band. Any attempt at recreating her bangs would mean a disaster, so I decided not to attempt it. The hair turned out to be nylon, it’s quite stiff, but it’s shiny, beautiful and frizz resilient, so I’m satisfied.

Since it was my very first attempt at rerooting this entry focuses on Midge’s hair, but there would have been no reroot at all had it not been for her sweet and lovely 1985 Diva- molded face. I didn’t use to be a fan of this mold, now that I have the doll, I can’t just believe how supremely beautiful her features are. Her eyes are purple and blue and a thick, navy blue eyeliner graces them. Her eyeshadows are orange and gold and her Magenta lipstick emphasizes her full lips. Now I really long for the gorgeous Wedding Day Midge 1990! One day maybe, but now my Mermaid Midge needs some clothes to wear.

Her busty figure would look best in the fashion from the era, but these unfortunately are extremely hard to come by in Poland, and if by some miracle they happen to be for sale, the price can give you heart attack! So my resources are limited, but I came up with these two contemporary clothing options.

Option 1. Having in mind the rich and vibrant colors that would best complement her hair I decided to go for purple, hence this fantastic evening dress. The upper part is made of something that resembles tulle but in reality it’s much sturdier and damage resilient. Unfortunately, it’s not stretchable so the Velcro hardly closes. The mermaid bottom of the dress is made of the same fabric and adds lightness to the general look of the outfit. The middle part is made of deep purple color that in the picture looks almost navy blue and it’s made of some elastic fabric. The front part of the dress is heavily sprinkled with glitter that creates magnificent patterns all over it. The accessories that come with it are a silver bracelet and a clutch. No shoes unfortunately and the ones that Midge is wearing belong to Purple Passion Barbie.

Option 2. When I first saw this dress I thought it was pretty, but I wasn’t sure if I should buy it, but I’m glad I did as it looks great on Midge. It’s all silver and white and made of a shin fabric. The Velcro suffers of course, it’s been tailored for a less generously endowed Barbie. The tulle overlayer is sprinkled with glitter and looks very durable. The teal trimming is a nice touch and adds color to this otherwise very placid looking dress. What I like most about the outfit it’s the diversified length, the back of the dress reaches the doll’s ankles, the front part exposes her legs nicely. The accessories this fashion pack included are a teal bracelet and a white handbag- not my favorite so I replaced it. I also added a necklace that belongs to another fashion pack and shoes from Easter Basket Barbie 1995.

I may sound a little boastful but I never really thought my efforts at restoring Midge would come out so well. Sure I didn’t fix the bite marks or her arm, the holes in her ears and her hand are still there but only several days ago she was no good even for a body donor, now she’ll be displayed on a shelf amongst other dolls, some of them new, but what makes her special to me is the time and effort I’ve put into restoring some of her beauty that was still there, only well concealed by dirt and damage.
